Cape Town fire: Firefighters injured, beloved landmarks razed Share Cape Town - Two firefighters were injured and taken to hospital on Sunday while trying to contain the fire that razed iconic Cape Town landmarks, including Rhodes Memorial’s restaurant and Mostert Mill, and damaged historic UCT buildings. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said that they were alerted to the vegetation fire above Philip Kgosana Drive at about 8.45am this morning. The fire moved up towards Rhodes Memorial and then towards the University of Cape Town (UCT) upper campus. It can be confirmed that the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant has burnt down, Table Mountain National Park fire manager Philip Prins said on Sunday afternoon.

Cape Town fire latest: Devastating blaze not yet under control

The City of Cape Town will continue efforts to contain the fire currently threatening infrastructure in the city bowl, as well as the University of Cape Town (UCT), well into the night.  This according to the latest update on firefighting efforts from the City’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, who said that a second firefighter has also been hospitalised with injuries sustained while tackling the blaze.  Cape Town fire continues into the night   In a statement released to the press at 21:30 on Sunday night, Carelse said that a plethora of emergency services have been mobilised to assist in containing the fire, which has already damaged property near the foot of Table Mountain.
