Moshe Milner · GPO · Getty On 17 May 1977 the Labour Party lost the election and, for the first time since the creation of the state of Israel, power passed to the rightwing opposition. Likud was now in charge. Its leader Menachem Begin, the new prime minister and a loyal supporter of Gush Emunim (Bloc of the Faithful), the religious ultraright organisation whose purpose was to colonise the West Bank, favoured annexing the Palestinian territories. At the Kol Israel (Voice of Israel ) radio station, this meant a change of vocabulary: it was no longer ‘the West Bank’ but ‘Judea and Samaria’. The term ‘settlements’ was banned in principle; we were now to refer to Jewish ‘localities’. As this was at the time optional, I did not always use the recommended language, which in any case did not conceal the true nature of the occupation.
