Biden must connect with rural Americans, and trains could help
We face a culture war in our country characterized by political dysfunction, racial disparities, militaristic police departments, health care inequities and a prolonged economic depression. Emotions run rampant when dealing with these issues. Edmund Burke, the 18th century Irish philosopher, captures my worry: “Rage and frenzy will pull down more in half an hour, than prudence, deliberation and foresight can build up in a hundred years.”
The administration of President Joe Biden must tamp down the animosity and divisiveness in our politics and among geographic sectors in our country. To meet this challenge, Biden needs to convey trust, truth and transparency to all American citizens. His statements must be clear and validated with evidence. We cannot accept or normalize anti-Semitic vandalism

Shocked and saddened by vandalism of menorah
All those associated with the Vermont Holocaust Memorial were shocked and deeply saddened Thursday afternoon when we learned that the Chabad Menorah on the Dartmouth Green had been deliberately vandalized earlier in the week (“Dartmouth College menorah vandalized,” Dec. 18).
The Vermont Holocaust Memorial is founded by children of Holocaust survivors. We know what anti-Semitism looks like. We know that it comes from ignorance and fear. We know that it can lead to terrible consequences. And we know that a seemingly small action like the vandalism of a public menorah is not small. Incidents like this are not expected in our community and they will not be tolerated.
