To mark its 50th anniversary, the Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) will hold a commemorative event called "From the Ashes of the Old: The History, Loss, and Memory of the Finnish Labour Temple" at the Thunder Bay Museum on Saturday.
It's been just over a year since a fire decimated the Finnish Labour Temple in Thunder Bay, Ont., a historic landmark for the city's Finnish community. Since then, the developer has been rebuilding the site, while the Finlandia Co-operative of Thunder Bay is working to reopen the temple's former Hoito Restaurant at a satellite location.
It was a bittersweet day for the Thunder Bay community as local historians gathered to pry open a century old time capsule, left behind in the rubble of the historic Finnish Labour Temple.
