Governor Gavin Newsom swore in Rob Bonta as California s 34th attorney general April 23. A national leader in the fight to reform the justice system, Bonta, a former East Bay assemblyman, is the first Filipino American in the state s history to serve in the role.
But Bonta, an ally to the LGBTQ community, will have a race on his hands to keep the position. Already candidates have announced they will run against him, including Anne Marie Schubert, a lesbian who is the Sacramento County district attorney and a registered independent. Moderate Republican Nathan Hochman, former assistant attorney general in the Bush administration and the former president of the Los Angeles Ethics Commission, has also announced he is in the race.

San Francisco, April 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) The National AIDS Memorial is marking National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day by celebrating its most recent Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship recipients, highlighting their work on campus and in their communities. The memorial has created a special section on its scholarship website highlighting their work, impact and commitment to social change, particularly around HIV/AIDS, which continues to disproportionately impact young people and communities of color.
Kia Announces the Latest Recipients of Yearly Scholarship

Nearly two years ago, Kia used what would have been Super Bowl commercial funds to instead launch a scholarship for students who embodied the automaker’s “Give It Everything” spirit. The first round of recipients (called the freshman class) was unveiled around this time last year, with the winners appearing on Kia’s YouTube channel and social media. Now, the sophomore class of “The Great Unknowns” Scholarship has been announced.
The 16 recipients of the scholarship attend classes at campuses around the country, including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cal State Northridge, the University of Connecticut, and Tulane University, to name just a few. Praised for not only their academic achievements, these students also went above and beyond as volunteers, non-profit leaders, and activists in their communities for causes like LGBTQ+ rights, homelessness, and social justice.
