good morning, everyone. i m deborah feyerick. search crews are out looking for more than a dozen people after a cruise ship ran aground, killing three. we ll take to you italy for the latest. plus mitt romney digs in his pocket and hands over some cash to a woman he doesn t know. we ll tell you why and hear what the woman has to say. we start with the rescue from that italian cruise ship sitting on its side right now. there are as many as 17 people still missing. one who isn t missing anymore is one of the ship s crew, found in a restaurant on the ship this morning. this comes more than 24 hours after the ship hit a sandbar, ripped a hole in its hull, and rolled over. earlier, we heard from some of the survivors. the crew member ran through the lobby yelling, abandon ship. we were in the theater when we heard the noise of the ship hitting the rock, and we felt a shudder in the ship. it was a magic act actually at the time, and the performers did a disappearing act. th
more on that in a moment. dan is going to join us live. also, we want to tell you the company that owns the ship pointing the finger squarely at the ship s captain for allowing the ship to run aground on an italian island. cnn received a statement from costa cruises just a short time ago which reads in part, it says while the investigation is ongoing, preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship s master, captain francesco schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences. the captain is under arrest now. he could face charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship. but he is defending himself today and you will hear that in just a moment as well. sadly though, crews today found two elderly people dead near the ship s restaurant. life vests still strapped around their bodies. that brings the death toll inside the ship to five. rescuers did pull out a south korean couple who were trapped for more than 24 hours. they re
getting some fuel. an american icebreaker helped a russian tanker get through the frozen barring see to deliver gas and oil. there is still a mile of ice between the tanker and the harbor. fuel will have to be piped in through a hose that is being laid out on top of the ice. on what would have been dr. martin luther king jr. s birthday, a wreath was laid at the new king memorial at the mall today. the interior department announced a correction will soon be made on an inscription there which paraphrases a quote from king. and now to the 2012 contenders and the race to the white house. a new cnn sfch/orc poll shows m romney as a clear front-runner, 34%, ahead of newt gingrich. another poll saids light on the possible reason a huge majority of republicans, 71%, said they would rather nominate a candidate that can beat barack obama in the fall than a candidate who agrees with them on the issues. romney s lead isn t set in stone. 56% of gop voters say they may change their min
