As many Virginians struggle to make rent amid the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, state lawmakers will consider more legislation during their latest session to help people keep their homes.
The General Assembly has already approved several bills to prevent evictions. One major measure, approved during a special session in late 2020, forces landlords to offer tenants payment plans if they’re behind on rent.

Rent is generally due within five days from the start of the month. A new regulation now requires your landlord to give you a 14-day notice, an increase from five days. If you receive one of these notices, don t freak out. It s required by state law that we send a notice of nonpayment of rent, said Patrick McCloud, the CEO of the Virginia Apartment Management Association.

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) December 31 marked the last day of the statewide moratorium on evictions in Virginia. Though different restrictions, there is still a nationwide ban on evictions until January 31, 2021.
The Virginia Rent and Mortgage Relief Program aims to help those in need of financial assistance maintain their housing during the coronavirus pandemic.
To be eligible for the assistance you must meet the following criteria:

To be eligible, an applicant must have:
A valid lease or mortgage
Experienced a qualified loss of income during the pandemic
Rent or mortgage payments at or below 150% Fair Market Rent
A gross monthly income at or below 80% of their area’s median income (during the last month)
Once you apply, the state has 45 days to reply to your application before a landlord can begin eviction proceedings. If you apply a second time, you must get a reply within 14 days.
Any financial assistance would come in a one-time payment, but there could be an opportunity to apply again.
