Samuel F.B. Morse, American painter, philanthropist, and inventor who developed an electric telegraph (1832–35). In 1838 he and his friend Alfred Vail developed the system of dots and dashes later known as the Morse Code. In 1844 he sent the first message over the first telegraph line in the United States.
