Officials have acknowledged a gun violence problem in the city among school-aged residents, both as victims and suspected perpetrators.
On June 20 of last year, 16-year-old Frederick Wells was shot on Charles Street after his 16-year-old companion was stabbed. On Sept. 21, 15-year-old Jalani Jones was shot in the head near the corner of North Clinton and Main streets. And on Jan. 8 14-year-old Akeem Stevens was shot in the head while inside the residence at 32 Conklin St.

Both the Poughkeepsie and Pawling districts successfully passed capital projects for renovations and upgrades in special votes in the past year.
Dover Superintendent Mike Tierney said their project was supposed to go up for a vote last year, but it was delayed due to the pandemic. It was definitely needed but with COVID and the questions about state aid we put it off, Tierney said.
In a newsletter to the Dover community, Rich Rennia of Rennia Engineering, who outlined the project for Dover, talked about the importance of upgrading the district s infrastructure. Teaching methods have changed in the last decade and therefore the district s infrastructure must also change in order to properly deliver for students, Rennia said. A proper STEM classroom will create an atmosphere where students can collaborate to solve problems, explore ideas and concepts and use their hands to build prototypes.
