A potentially deadly disease, scrub typhus, spread by chiggers has been found in the United States for the first time, thus far only in North Carolina.
The bacteria that causes scrub typhus has been detected in wild mites in the US. They could transmit the disease to humans via bites which can, in serious cases, cause death and a rash.
