Family celebrates four golden wedding couples

So three, if not four, cheers for this family who have celebrated four golden anniversaries in the last 70 years. First to reach the landmark were John and Susannah Bough, who lived at 435 Marston Road, Oxford. John and Susannah Bough They celebrated their anniversary with a family party in 1952, having married in 1902. The Oxford Mail carried a picture of them, with a brief report. Mr Bough was a painter and decorator and was still working at the age of 76. He and his wife, 75, had an enormous family, with five children, 34 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The Home Guard may be seen as a comical and often clumsy and haphazard outfit in the popular Dad’s Army on TV. In truth, its members worked hard to protect everyone during the Second World War, particularly when German bombs were raining down and the threat of invasion was very real.

First ever cars made by some of the world s most popular carmakers

0 Comments Karl Benz built the first car in 1885, and since then many thousands of companies have sprung up trying to make a name for themselves. But few have survived and here we take a look at how some of those survivors. Sometimes things are a lot more convoluted than you think though, with some companies claiming two (or even three) first cars… Mercedes-Benz (1886)   This is where it all started – the first company to build a car. Karl Benz built his first car in 1885 and he patented it in January 1886, but the Mercedes name wouldn t be adopted until 1901. That first car (called the Patent Motorwagen, pictured here) had just three wheels and a 0.75hp 954cc single-cylinder engine, but in 1893 Benz built his first four-wheeler, the Viktoria, powered by a 3hp 1745cc engine.
