Courtesy of Jeff Tarbox Westport Island’s two candidates on the June 8 ballot for second selectman answered Wiscasset Newspaper’s questions on their traits, experience, etc. that will aid their service as selectman; what their top priorities would be if elected, and why; and anything else they would like to get across to voters. The newspaper told candidates their complete response could total up to 500 words. Bailey Bartlett “If I were elected my overall aspiration would be to promote, encourage and motivate other islanders my age to volunteer. I am a big believer in the Unbuntu philosophy, ‘I am, because we are.’ The philosophy centers around the concept that a human can’t truly prosper in isolation. Living on an island, this becomes so true.

The Wiscasset High School teenager, and daughter of Teens to Trails founders Bob and Carol Leone, had a big love for the outdoors. Together with her parents and her older sister Lindsay, Sara enjoyed so many meaningful experiences in nature, from jumping in cold ocean waves to family camping to watching meteor showers light up the night sky. Sara’s inspired outdoor spirit lives on in both our organization and the scholarship that bears her name.

Photo courtesy of Erica Berman Morris Farm, a Wiscasset nonprofit providing food and educational programming, received a wave of donations from the community in the past month, closing the gap on a $30,000 shortfall caused by the pandemic. In just over one month, community members donated over $25,000, according to Morris Farm Board Chairperson Madelyn Hennessey. The donations alone reinforce the nonprofit’s existence for the next few years.
