As Sergeant Lunger got out of the car and approached the drivers side of the vehicle, the driver shot Sergeant Lunger without warning. A second officer in a separate vehicle had also responded and returned fire as the pickup raced away. The second officer used his radio to alert dispatchers. Within a couple of hours, the bullet riddled pickup truck was found abandoned in east oakland. Sergeant lunger was taken to the medical facility. He had died from his injuries.
