In what was No. 5 Denver’s first competitive action in over 10 months, Pioneer coach Bill Tierney said postgame that though he expected there to be an immense enjoyment of the experience his team had ripped away from them last March, all was normal once some early mistakes were made.
“It didn’t take long to be frustrated,” Tierney said. “It didn’t take long to get back to being another lacrosse game that you hope like hell to win, and we were lucky to do so.”
The usual sluggish start that have been a staple of early February college lacrosse in recent years was exacerbated not only by the long layoff, but also by a valiant underdog effort from the Utes in the Pioneers’ 9-8 victory on Saturday afternoon in Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
