NEW YORK Morocco’s Ambassador to the UN said Thursday that his country’s Jews never faced persecution, glossing over some historical tensions, a week after Rabat’s decision to normalize relations with Israel.
“We are very proud that in the history of Morocco, there was never any persecution of Jewish people. They were just… part of our society,” Omar Hilale said at a Hanukkah candle lighting ceremony in New York hosted by Israel’s UN Mission and the Forum for Cultural Diplomacy.
Morocco Slams Door on Anti-Israel Protests
Moroccan authorities have prevented a protest in the capital Rabat against the kingdom’s move to normalize ties with Israel.
A heavy police presence backed by water cannons and anti-riot forces deployed in the main avenue leading to Parliament Square, where a group of pro-Palestinian rights organizations had planned the sit-in. In addition, Morocco’s BDS coordinator Sion Assidon was escorted away by authorities and asked to leave the area, according to Reuters.
According to the report, the protest was not authorized due to COVID-19 restrictions in place.
“Unfortunately, political normalization comes after a long process of economic, agricultural, tourism, and academic ties,” Assidon, a Moroccan Jew, told Reuters.

Moroccan Jewish leaders on the promise of the Israel-Morocco breakthrough
Last week’s announcement that Morocco and Israel will formalize the unofficial ties that have bound them together for decades brought fanfare and celebration to populations in both countries.
Israelis of Moroccan descent hailed the move and relished the opportunity to renew connections that previously could be explored only through unofficial channels. In contrast, the headlines in Morocco were focused primarily on US recognition of the country’s sovereignty in the Western Sahara a disputed territory to Morocco’s south. But Jews living in Morocco were clearly elated.
For most Moroccans, the connection with Jews and Israel has not changed at all; as a nation, they have always been rather friendly toward Israelis. In recent years, I have visited the country more than ten times. I’ve always worn a kippah openly. I’ve never encountered hostile looks from the population.
