The history of the Black community in the county at the turn of the century is poorly recorded. One noted person from this time was William Williams. After a long adventurous life, he spent his final years as a shoe shiner in Olympia.

Gertrude Nelson and she was the supervisor of music for the Olympia school district in 1819. She was also the aunt of Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who is considered the founder of Earth Day.
Over the years many people have taught at Olympia High School. One of these teachers was Mary Diven, who later went on to become a noted community lecturer.
