Reparations! Reparations!

Last Thursday, August 17 was the birthday of Marcus Garvey and given the fact that we are into Emancipation Month I had planned to look at Garvey in the context of a second Emancipation, borrowing from Grenadian historian Edward Cox (who incidentally is married to Vincentian Paula Nanton), whose lecture in Grenada in 2018 was entitled, “Towards a Second Emancipation: Garveyism in Grenada and Marcus Garvey’s Visit to the Island.” …

The people who remained – The Vincentian indigenous community – Searchlight

The SVG UWI Open Campus, last Tuesday and Wednesday held its Country Conference on the theme “Ancestry and Heritage- The Vincentian Identity and Heritage: From whence we came.” Very interesting and informative information was shared based on the research interests of those who presented papers. The paper I presented was on the indigenous people who remained after the mass banishment to Ruattan off Honduras in 1797. My presentation was part …

Continuing the Reparations Conversation

I listened to a discussion on radio, part of which was about Reparations, and realised that we have not done a good job educating our folks about that issue. Eruption, similar to 1902?   - Searchlight

Eruption, similar to 1902?   By Renwick Rose In this the second and final part of a look at the eruptions of 1812 (done last week) and 1902, I try to bring the highlights of those eruptions as recorded in THE ST. VINCENT HANDBOOK. This two-part series replaces temporarily the series on the 1981 struggle against repressive legislation which will resume next week. Lead scientist, Dr Richard Robertson, himself a Vincentian, and his team monitoring the volcano, have expressed the belief that the current eruption may well follow the pattern of the 1902 one, the most destructive in our recorded history. No praise can be too high for the herculean effort of the team and its contribution to the safety and well-being of the Vincentian people, which is impossible to be quantified. We must therefore take their advice very seriously.
