most potent thing that can stop him? i think it is. and the surprise has been that so far he s been able to handle that issue. we all thought it would wrap around his axel much earlier. he showed great candidate skills and learned a lot from the last election. but last night i think was reaffirmed for everybody, reminded everybody this issue was kryptonite for him and they pushed out the kryptonite and could see him start to wilt and start to fade and see the others gaining strength as he was losing his. so i think everybody smells that now and i think he s going to get a lot more of it in the next debates. you know, the next debates i think are going to get really interesting now. i think everybody is going to have to come with their body armor loaded up. ron carey, the new nbc poll of south carolina and florida republican voters goes to another problem that appears to be, it doesn t exactly say how it plays in the campaign, but the question, the mormon question that we all don t
that is herman cain. the debays matter. we have seen the rise and fall from pawlenty way back when to perry and bachman and now cain. south carolina has a big christian population. we asked the mormon question. are mormons christian. 53% of voters told us no. among those who said mormons are not christian, cain led 33-19. it s some evidence that romney s religion does matter to some voters. that was being handled carefully. we talked about it with mitt romney. he is thinking about the nomination and the general election. in some ways that guides how he handles the questions. he does well with people who think that being a mormon is being a christian. he does well with them and

this is about electability and winning as opposed to just, you know, dying on the spear of a particular principle so i think you ll see more and more folks around. it s going to take time. michael, just following up on something jonathan asked which is this sort of mormon question. i mean, if we assume or if it s inevitable at this point that mitt romney will receive the nomination, at what point does he have that kennedy moment, where kennedy explains, you know, talked about catholicism and he was the first obvious catholic president. right. at what point would you advise him to actually get ahead of that issue? well, he had that moment four years ago when he addressed the mormon question i thought in a very well prepared and articulated speech on the subject. i don t think he has to do that again. i think what you are hearing is a noise from a very, very, very small segment of the body
