the next afternoon, july 7th, miles dabord called a friend in new zealand on the satellite phone. there were no other voices in the background, no sounds. but miles reportedly seemed in a good mood, laughing and joking. on july 8th erica weis arrived on morea for the vacation she and miles had planned two months earlier. i remember sitting at the restaurant by the pool and i heard a motor sound from out in the ocean. he was out there on the dinghy from the boat. miles had said he d be arriving on a ferry and instead he came from the dinghy from the catamaran, which was anchored in a nearby bay. how did he seem? he s fine. i mean, you know, it was, hello, nice to see you, kiss. nothing too romantic, and nothing too cold.
