July 20 meeting
KEY ACTION Rezoning of land along South Baney Road, which is behind the Ashland County Fairgrounds, will be heard by the planning commission at the Sept. 7 council meeting.
DISCUSSION The request comes from a want to transfer the property to a high business district instead of a residential district, Mayor Matt Miller said. If the property is rezoned to a high business district, this will allow the future site to be used for the Homeward Bound Dog Shelter, an estimated 6,000-square-foot project.
The shelter would house dogs and serve as a kennel as well as having a retail aspect to it. Miller assured the audience and council that there still would be parking available for the fair and the entire rezoned property would not be used for the dog shelter.

The Kapiti Coast’s local economy grew 0.3% over the year to March 2021, joining the Wairarapa in leading growth across the Wellington Region in the wake of COVID-19, according to Infometrics’ latest Quarterly Economic Monitor report.
The district continues to benefit from a growing number of residents working from home and strong local spending.
“Our community’s efforts to support local over the last year have resulted in consumer spending growth of 2.1%, outpacing the national average and more than recovering the loss of spending during last year’s lockdown,” says Natasha Tod, Group Manager Strategy, Growth and Recovery for the Kāpiti Coast District Council.
