YI of Kew Gardens Hills Plans Tribute to Rabbi Schonfeld, z l By JLNJ Staff | May 13, 2021 (Courtesy of YI of Kew Garden Hills) On Sunday June 6 at 1 p.m. Easterm time (8 p.m. in Israel), the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills will hold a virtual memorial tribute to its founding rabbi, Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld, z”l, who passed away in December 2020. Rabbi Schonfeld, an erudite man who was at home in many worlds and known around the world, built the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills from a minyan in the basement of the Saperstein home into a bustling shul with multiple minyanim. He built Kew Gardens Hills into a center of Orthodox Jewish life and insured the viability of Jewish life in Queens by founding the Vaad Harabonim of Queens.

How to Help Someone With Substance Abuse Issues’ By Ellie Forman | April 15, 2021 Around 46% of Americans have a close friend or family member who struggles with substance use or addiction. When we expand this to include colleagues, peers or even members of our shul, chances are everybody knows somebody. Addiction is a disease that affects every community – Jewish or not. As members of Klal Yisrael, though, we are all accountable for one another. But what does that accountability look like in practice? Addressing the “Now What?” CCSA was started as a direct response to addiction in our own family and the isolation, fear and desperation that we felt. When our family was confronted with this issue, we struggled to accept the “three Cs” of dealing with a loved one’s addiction: “I didn’t cause it, I can’t cure it, I can’t control it.” Feeling overwhelmed with helplessness and fear, my parents began fran
