Negros dengue cases up 357%, epidemic declared in Hinigaran

NegOcc taking measures to curb alarming dengue surge

BACOLOD CITY - The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Negros Occidental is taking measures to address the 282 percent increase in local dengue cases as of the third week of May. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Tuesday the figures can be considered "alarming," but he noted the rise in cases is part of a three-year cycle of a surge in the number of the mosquito-borne disease. "Our PHO is aware of the situation and taking remedial measures, mostly reminding people to keep our surroundings clean," he added. Latest data from the Department of Health-Western Visayas (DOH-6) show Negros Occidental continues to have the highest number of newly reported cases in the region, with 96, based on the Morbidity Week No. 20 updates. The new cases indicate an increase of 282 percent during the week covering May 15 to 21 this year compared to the cases logged for the same period last year. During the period January 1 to May 21, 2022, Negros Occidental recorded a total of 657 case
