Smith: Arctic loon sighting first of its kind in Wisconsin
Ryan Brady of Washburn documented an Arctic loon on May 31 near Herbster in Lake Superior. It was the first sighting of the species in Wisconsin.

An adult in breeding plumage was observed May 31 near Herbster in Lake Superior, the first sighting in Wisconsin history. Lake Superior is famous for being the biggest and deepest of the Great Lakes. It s also the least fertile. That lower productivity and large surface area can sometimes make Gitche Gumme seem like a blue desert. Late Monday morning was proving to be one of those times for Ryan Brady of Washburn, Betsy Bartelt of Appleton and Tim Oksuita of Moquah.
