Pinehurst Surgical Petitions for New Facility in Sanford

FirstHealth Breaks Ground at New Cancer Center

FirstHealth of the Carolinas broke ground Thursday morning on its new $68 million comprehensive cancer center. The all-encompassing facility represents a major step forward for cancer treatment and patient care, from diagnosis to treatment, and most importantly, survivorship. Construction of the four-story building is expected to continue through late 2022. The new structure and its adjoining parking deck on Page Road are located directly across the street from Moore Regional’s main hospital campus in Pinehurst. FirstHealth Cancer Center, rendering courtesy of CPL Architecture Art Medeiros, chairman of Foundation of FirstHealth Board, said building the multidisciplinary cancer center was both a practical and pragmatic decision. FirstHealth has a long-standing history of providing exceptional cancer services, but has grown and expanded beyond the capacity of its current facilities.

Median Age of Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients is Shrinking in Moore County

With the majority of older adults in Moore County now vaccinated against COVID-19, the average age of hospitalized residents has decreased. At FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, the median age of COVID-19 patients was 69 when infections peaked in January. The median age for April was 61 as of Tuesday. “We have seen a slight decrease in the median age of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and we expect that trend to continue over the coming weeks,” said Jayne Lee, director of infection control and patient safety for the hospital. “We’ve seen a significant decrease in the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients from nursing homes, and most of the patients treated for COVID-19 over the last several weeks have been unvaccinated. In fact, all patients currently being treated for COVID-19 at Moore Regional are unvaccinated.”

People of the Pines: The Pilot s 20 Under 40

The Pilot asked our readers to help us find young professionals deserving of this award through an open nominations phase in January and February of this year. We received over 170 nominations identifying 120 candidates. An independent panel of judges comprised of Moore County business and community leaders evaluated the nominees based solely on the information that was provided in the nomination. They were specifically looking for professional success, proven leadership skills and a résumé of community service. Likely, you will see familiar faces. Maybe, you’ll find your next realtor, physician or financial advisor. While only 20 people could be chosen for this honor, it is very clear that Moore County is rich with hard-working and determined young professionals. We wish we could honor all 120 candidates today, but we’ll have to wait until next year to meet more of these capable young people who live and work among us.
