Borrowed pants save the day for Backwell

Richard Backwell took out the Maroochy River Legends Pro-Am. Golf Peter Owen Premium Content Subscriber only Though it’s much more casual than the usual professional golf tours – players are allowed to wear shorts, for example, and ride in carts – Australia’s Legends Tour still abides by some longstanding traditions. One is that winners must wear long pants at the presentation. And that presented a problem for Richard Backwell, whose round of four under-par 68 earned him the title at Friday’s Maroochy River Legends Pro-Am. Defending champion Rawson hits reset in return to Vic PGA | PGA of Australia

Published - 2 months By - Tony Webeck Much has changed in the past 15 months since Campbell Rawson’s Victorian PGA triumph yet the intention remains the same. A year in which he had planned to use his status as an ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia winner to play up to 30 events and take his game overseas was effectively wiped out by COVID-19. This week’s Victorian PGA Championship at the Moonah Links Resort represents a chance to put that plan back into action. A Kiwi who grew up playing golf with Ryan Fox in Auckland but moved to Adelaide a decade ago after being scouted to play AFL, Rawson turned to professional golf in 2015.

Past heartache driving Pilkadaris at Victorian PGA | PGA of Australia

Published - 2 months By - Tony Webeck Past heartaches including a Moonah Links near miss are driving local hope Terry Pilkadaris to earn a breakthrough ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia title at this week’s Victorian PGA Championship. To be conducted concurrently with the Celebrity Amateur Challenge, the Victorian PGA is the first of two consecutive events at Moonah Links, the Legends Course and Open Course both in use this week with the Open Course assuming sole hosting rights for the Moonah Classic the following week. It was on the Open Course 12 years ago that Pilkadaris came up just short at the Moonah Classic that for three years was co-sanctioned with the secondary US Nationwide Tour.
