Galesburg City Council is expected to take up a tabled item to study schematics and program designs in developing Churchill Junior High into a community center. The contract for Farnsworth Group was originally brought to the Council in March but was tabled until after a new council was to be seated. This will be the first meeting with three new Council members, all three of whom ran on Churchill not being an appropriate site for a community center. The contract would be for $76,000. If Council does approve the study the initial phase would take 8 weeks to complete, which would be followed by an additional agreement the Council would have to sign off on. The work could go out to bid as early as August and construction could begin in September. Galesburg City Council on Monday could approve buying the current home of the Galesburg Rescue Mission to provide a permanent warming shelter and possible homeless shelter. The purchase would be for $350,000 for the two properties at 435 E. Schwartzman says the Rescue Mission building allows the city to acquire a newer building that can be prepped to serve as a warming shelter. Galesburg Police responded to an apartment at Moon Towers on Friday night for a battery that had just occurred. Officers met with a 64-year-old man who had a cut on his arm and was bleeding from his mouth. The man said his 40-year-old son and another man were inside the apartment and they got upset when they were told to leave. It's unclear why the man wanted his son to leave, but according to police reports, the man "didn't want to get in trouble." Most visitors are required to be approved with a visitor's pass at Knox County Housing Authority properties. The man's son pulled a knife on him and then cut him on the arm and kicked him in the face. The 40-year-old then ran away and departed on a bike in an unknown direction. The man was added to the Galesburg Police Department's pending arrest list and is facing charges of Domestic Battery causing bodily harm, Aggravated Battery to a Senior Citizen, and Aggravated Battery with a weapon.
