Catholic Bishops join Orthodox in “Day of Mourning” for Hagia Sophia
Catholic bishops across the United States have issued joint statements with their Greek Orthodox counterparts expressing sorrow at the reopening of Hagia Sophia as a mosque.
July 24, was declared a “Day of Mourning” as the former Byzantine cathedral opened for formal Islamic Friday prayers for the first time in more than 80 years on July 24.
Hagia Sophia had been a museum since Turkey’s establishment as a secular state. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a decree July 10 converting it into a mosque following a ruling by the Council of State, Turkey’s highest administrative court, earlier that day which declared unlawful an 80-year old government decree converting the building from a mosque into a museum.

THE President of Montenegro, Milo Ðukanovic, has been forced to sign legislation restoring places of worship across his country to the Serbian Orthodox Church, while urging opponents of the measure to try to overturn it.
“Given the state President’s obligation to promulgate a re-voted law, there was no alternative,” explained President Ðukanovic, whose Adriatic country separated from Serbia after a referendum in 2006. “But I believe our Constitutional Court is the only competent body which can now provide an answer: I hope conditions have been created for this.”

Europe’s second-newest nation made a second effort this week at greater religious freedom.
And evangelicals in Montenegro, the Balkan nation independent from Serbia since 2006, couldn’t be more pleased.
“This is a great blessing, we are out of the gray zone and drawn into legal existence,” said Sinisa Nadazdin, pastor of Gospel of Jesus Christ Church located in the capital city of Podgorica.
