GLYNDEBOURNE S 2019 festival production of The Magic Flute was a full throttle spectacle of large-scale puppets, fantasy landscapes and typical production values when it came to costume, hair, make-up and so on. As explained in the programme for this semi-staged performance however, the winter 2020 show is understandably a very different animal. Instead, director Donna Stirrup and conductor Leo McFall presented an abbreviated version, sung in English, and with no scenery. One doesn’t normally associate Glyndebourne with spare productions, but there is something endearing about the costumes and props for this show being drawn from “what they could find” rather than being meticulously, specifically crafted.
