Our fire department, our emergency management, our hospital workers, all of our care workers, they saved lives on tuesday night. Let us recognize the great service. While you cant do anything about having a 22yearold body, there is nothing that should prevent you from having a thousandyearold mind. Seek the wisdom of the ages. Read. Achieve that thousandyearold mind. My third and final lesson has to do with values, and the vital work of enriching your spirituality, your spirit. Be a servant leader. As you transition into independent adulthood, finally moving out of the basement, but striving to put the needs of others ahead of yours and strive to be a leader, putting others first, and you will find a that lifes journey will be more fulfilling and enriching. Look for the causes bigger than yourself, causes that provide and convey higher purpose, and dedicate yourselves wholly to those causes. Be an exemplar of humanity and fellowship in action. We moved to des moines in 1857. We chose it because of the central location. When we came here in 1857, the building was not built yet. We used the building across the street called the old brick capital. We used it as the City Government while building this building. The capitol was built from 18711886. It was dedicated in 1874 and has been in use since then. 1884 and has been in use since then. This is the highest point in des moines. It is where the glaciers stopped. It was given to the state of iowa by people. The purpose was to build the capitol here. The dome is the most noticeable part. Theres not a location where you do not notice the dome rising up. We are the only capitol that has five domes. The largest is 275 feet tall. It is covered with real gold. From the inside, you see 219 feet. As
Since history has changed over time we had to know where we , were starting so we could know where we were going. We spent some time investigating the africanamerican civil rights movement. At least as far as the Voting Rights act of 1965. We looked at the 1960 election of president kennedy and president johnson, a fair amount about vietnam from the view of the soldiers, protest, other groups. We read the piece treated that concluded the vietnam conflict. We analyze the port huron statement written in 1962. We noted an emphasis on participatory democracy that is, people had to be involved in decisions that shape their lives, and this involve the rejection of hierarchy and topdown decisionmaking.
