On 8 November last year, the West London rapper AJ Tracey was playing the first of two headline shows at Alexandra Palace. Halfway through his set, after playing “Necklace” (lyrics: “I put a whip on my neck / I put a whip on my necklace”), he paused. A man in tinted glasses, skinny jeans and a dark T-shirt jogged nervously onto the stage. Around his neck was a massive diamond chain with a glittering rectangular pendant hanging off it. “All right, listen up,” Tracey announced. “This is my jeweller. He’s got something new for me.” The man took the chain off and held it up to screams from the 10,000 people in the crowd. Then he fastened it round Tracey’s neck. “You know what that says on the front?” asked the rapper. “It says ‘Ladbroke Grove’ on it.” The crowd screamed again, a glowing mass of iPhones recording the moment for posterity. Tracey gave the man a hug, sent him off to the side of the stage, then launched into “Fashion Week”.
