A 5MW/7.45MWh battery storage project near Milton Keynes – Thrive Renewables’ first – has this month entered into construction.
Initial ground works and site preparation have begun, and will be followed by the earthing installation. After this, the trench will be dug and the cable connecting the Wicken battery to the electricity grid will be laid.
The project is expected to be fully operational in August of this year, with Wicken to provide flexibility and balancing services, charging the batteries when clean energy is abundant and exporting it back to the grid during peak usage times. It is also to provide frequency response services to National Grid.

Thrive Renewables has acquired its second battery storage asset, with this being a 20MW battery project in Bristol.
It has the capacity to deliver between one and two hours of electricity for flexibility services such as frequency response and balancing services to the national and local grid. The Feeder Road site will participate in both wholesale market trading and future Capacity Market auctions, the company said.
The company’s portfolio of projects reflects how the energy system is changing, said Monika Paplaczyk, investment director at Thrive Renewables.

Thrive Renewables is to acquire a 5MW/7.5MWh battery storage facility from Eclipse Power Generation.
Located at Wicken, just outside of Milton Keynes, the battery - which is to be constructed by summer 2021 - is to be Thrive Renewables first foray into the market. It is to participate in wholesale market trading as well as take part in future capacity market auctions to provide balancing services to National Grid ESO. The battery will also be capable of providing balancing services to the local distribution network.
Monika Paplaczyk, senior investment manager at Thrive Renewables, said that the company is “very pleased” to be providing flexibility and therefore enabling more wind and solar power to come onto the system.
