This year’s 93rd Academy Awards include more diversity than in previous years, with 16 out of the 24 acting nominees being people of color.
Of the eight films nominated in the best picture category, there are several like “Judas and The Black Messiah” and “Minari” that highlight underrepresented communities. Here’s everything you need to know about the films that made the Best Picture list.
The Father
French director Florian Zeller’s debut feature based on his own play moves like a seasoned scribe’s late-career entry. “The Father” depicts Anthony’s (Anthony Hopkins) fight to retain his apartment and independence despite his experiences with dementia and his daughter Anne’s (Olivia Colman) challenges helping her dad.

After being postponed from February, the Academy Awards are back this year with the presentation ceremony to be held in-person at Los Angeles Union Station and the Dolby Theatre on Sunday. People in Thailand will get a chance to see the live broadcast next Monday morning.
The nominations this year are quite diverse, which is probably a good sign given choices in years past have sparked backlash for not recognising actors of colour and women.

Youn Yuh-jung was nominated for best supporting actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her role in “Minari,” becoming the first South Korean actress to achieve the feat.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday unveiled its final list of nominations for the 2021 Oscars Awards. The awards ceremony will take place next month.
Youn, who plays an eccentric grandmother in “Minari,” will vie for the prize of best actress in a supporting role with Maria Bakalova for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” Glenn Close for “Hillbilly Elegy,” Olivia Colman for “The Father” and Amanda Seyfried for “Mank.”
