A judge in the case against two brothers arrested in connection with violence in Phoenix – north of Durban – in the wake of the July 2021 civil unrest referred to police investigations as 'shoddy'.
Two brothers who allegedly "assaulted any black person found walking in the area" were found not guilty of the murder of Mondli Majola, 19, in Phoenix during the 2021 July unrest.
The Durban High Court handed down the judgement and said that the State had failed to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the two men were guilty of murder.
The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban has ruled that the State has failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that two men charged with the murder of a 19-year-old man during the July 2021 civil unrest in Phoenix, are guilty of murder.
