HALIFAX Un nouveau robot sous-marin se joindra à l’escouade canadienne de surveillance des baleines noires de l’Atlantique Nord, qui tente d’empêcher ces mammifères en voie de disparition d’entrer en collision avec des navires dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent.
Traditionnellement, ces cétacés passaient les mois d’été dans les environs de la baie de Fundy, entre le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Nouvelle-Écosse, mais ces dernières années, elles ont migré plus au nord, vers le golfe du Saint-Laurent en pleines voies de navigation. Ottawa a ordonné ces dernières années des limitations de vitesse pour les navires et un certain nombre de fermetures temporaires de pêche dans le secteur.
