actually two fatalities. i have friends thaw on the island riding around on bicycles checking on everyone. what s the level of destruction like on the island? massive. massive. when you go to the east end of the island, there s just a lot of destruction. the houses surrounding the house are all gone. when you go to the west end of the island, the old restaurants up there, they re all gone. the street going to captiva is now a beach. was there enough time to evacuate? is it just battle hardened floridians used to storms saying, we ll be all right, we ll ride it out? . well, a lot of people have very expensive, well-built homes on sanibel. and they felt with their multimillion dollar homes built
about an hour and a half. they had an atv. they explored the whole neighborhood. they had probably almost 30 of my neighbors that live right on the water, they stayed on the island as well. there are a lot of fears that people on sanibel, their lives were lost because people stayed on the island, they didn t get out soon enough. i have friends on the island right now. i know of one person that died at the dunes. there might be another one that i ve heard that has passed away, but i ve only heard of actually two fatalities. i have friends now on the island riding around on bicycles checking on everyone. reporter: riding around on bicycles on sanibel island, not for fun, but because that s the only way they can get around. when you talk to people about why they stayed, they say in some instances we ve been
which just shows you completing the job there as well. but again, i m interested let me jump in with a question here, laura. forgive me for that. what you didn t see with us on sanibel was one partner wanted to leave and the other did not. and it seemed like there was a bit of shock going on. do you see that a lot, the effects of the storm, where people don t know what to make of their surroundings and how desperate they probably need to get out of those places? yes, sir. i mean, to be honest with you, this is their home. this is everything that they built. this is everything that they love and everything that they know. so, it s really hard for them to just walk away from that, even when it s destroyed, even when it s devastating. their feelings are hurt. they just want to give up. but they don t want to leave their home. and i can understand that. you know, we have things at home that just can t be replaced. especially when you re at your most vulnerable, right? that s right.
the video footage, literally it s house to house, just ensuring that anyone in distress or need is located and brought to safety. we were at it all day yesterday. the teams and crews are back out there today to ensure that we get the people safe. in addition to the lifesaving mission, we re also working to ensure that the marine transportation system is restored, that the ports are reopened, and we have cutters returning into those areas to ensure that our commercial lifelines are also available for the reconstitution effort. admiral, i mentioned sanibel island. we saw that bridge collapse in several places. only way in and out from the mainland. we know there have been rescues made out there as well. can you say more about that mission, the focus on those barrier islands that are so isolated now with people definitely still there? we ve definitely been focused on sanibel and, you know, are continuing to work as part of the integrated effort
