The beauty of curly hair types is that it is full of life with interesting textures and gorgeous curls. But for most of us, it gets hard to identify if we have curly hair types or if it’s just frizzy.

It gives me chills to think that, almost exactly a year ago today, hair salons reopened following four months of closures during the first lockdown. The joy was short-lived: the industry faced two further closings over the course of the year. But having been open since April, salons are back in full swing (permanently – I hope!).
The first thing I booked in for post-lockdown was balayage with my colourist Anita Rice at Buller and Rice in east London. A process of delicately freehand-painting colour on to individual strands, balayage gives a natural, sun-kissed look and is a colour technique that is now on many treatment menus up and down the country. According to Google, searches for balayage are up 550 per cent month-on-month.
