Parliament asked to probe race-gender row at UCT
South Africa’s parliamentary oversight committee on higher education has been asked to summon the University of Cape Town (UCT) to explain its controversial interim appointment of a 72-year-old retired white male in charge of transformation, replacing a black woman who was allegedly ousted from the role before her contract was up.
Last week, the university announced that Professor Loretta Feris, the deputy vice-chancellor responsible for transformation, is going on sabbatical until January 2022 and would be replaced in an acting capacity by Emeritus Professor Martin Hall, who worked at UCT 12 years ago.
