Next Round of Talks to Focus on Future Govt: Mansoor
As the countdown begins for the next round of the peace negotiations, negotiator Abdul Hafiz Mansoor said the talks will focus on the modality of division of power in a future government.
Mansoor said that during three months of talks in Doha, he has found that the Taliban’s ideology has not changed.
“They said that the Taliban has changed. The Taliban is no longer the former Taliban, but my understanding and recognition prove that no change has occurred in the Taliban’s ideology,” said Mansoor.
He said that if peace comes with the departure of one person and the establishment of an interim government in the country, it would be a right move, but added that the achievements such as freedom of expression and human rights should be preserved.
Taliban Fully Prepared for Next Round of Talks: Spokesman
The second round of the peace negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban are set to begin on January 5 in Doha, Qatar.
The Taliban’s spokesman Mohammad Naeem told TOLOnews that the group was fully prepared for the second round of talks.
“We will return to what was agreed, we do not have any problem in this matter,” said Naeem.
Meanwhile, the delegation representing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in the talks with the Taliban has also said that the republic’s team has conducted necessary consultations and will return to the talks at the scheduled time.
Kabul Team to Focus on Ceasefire, Saving Govt System
The peace negotiating team representing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in the talks with the Taliban on Wednesday said that the republic’s team will focus their efforts to end the war and protect the system in the second round of the peace negotiation talks, which will begin on January 5.
The republic’s chief negotiator Masoom Stanekzai said that in the second round of the talks efforts will be focused on a permanent end to the war not a gradual end to the conflict in Afghanistan.
“First there is the issue of security which has a major significance for the Afghan people -the talks about security involve ceasefire and the protection of the people and highways and also the issue of drugs,” said Masoom Stanekzai, the republic’s chief negotiator while speaking at an event organized by the Afghan Institute of Strategic Studies.

Afghanistan’s chief peace negotiator Masoom Stanekzai said on Wednesday that while he knows Afghans want a “quick result”, which is not possible, the focus will be on a ceasefire when talks resume.
Speaking at a gathering at the Institute for Peace Studies in Kabul, Stanekzai said: “We will go to the negotiations with a strong will.”
“Ending the war in Afghanistan is the demand of the people of the country,” he added.
This comes just days ahead of peace talks resuming in Doha between the Afghan republic’s team and the Taliban’s team.
“We know the people expect a quick result, but it’s a little difficult as it’s not just in our hands,” Stanekzai said.
