Work on Daducha Dam begins - Newspaper

RAWALPINDI: The construction work on Daducha Dam was formally launched on Thursday by Frontier Works Organization (FWO) after locals ended their protest on administration’s assurance that their demands would be fulfilled. Last week, the construction work on dam was stopped by the local residents while demanding to increase the compensation money, rehabilitation of the locals and other benefits. Deputy Commissioner retired Capt Anwarul Haq held meeting with the landholders and sent proposals to Punjab government with the solution of their two demands. In the meantime, the landholders’ representative allowed starting the work on construction of dam. On Thursday, a ceremony was also held in this regard. Assistant Commissioner (AC) Saddar Mehar Ghulam Abbas Haral, Small Dams Organization and other departments’ officials attended the ceremony.

More deaths from Covid-19 in twin cities - Newspaper

ISLAMABAD: As many as seven people succumbed to coronavirus and 161 got infected in the twin cities on Tuesday. Islamabad reported four deaths and 98 new cases while Rawalpindi saw three patients falling prey to the virus and 63 more testing positive. Officials of the capital administration said the deceased were residents of I-8, Bhara Kahu, Tarlai and Chirrah.During the last 24 hours, 5,277 tests were conducted out of which 98 results came back positive, the officials said, adding that the positivity rate was recorded at 1.8pc. On the other hand, three Covid-19 patients died while 32 more tested positive, with 63 people recovering in Rawalpindi district.

In Rawalpindi, four patients breathed their last while 29 tested positive. Naseem Akhtar, 69, a resident of Gulshanabad, Adiala, was shifted to Kulsoom International Hospital on Jan 8 where he died. Imtiaz Bibi, 57, a resident of Lala Rukh Colony in Taxila, had been under treatment at the Fauji Foundation Hospital since Dec 21 but could not survive and died on Friday night. Abdul Haq, 70, from Wah Cantonment and Mohammad Hanif, 75, from Dhoke Mazharabad in Chaklala succumbed to the virus at Pims where they had been brought on Jan 8. Meanwhile, the district recorded 458 active patients with 86 under treatment in hospitals and 372 isolated in their homes. Moreover, 466 people are waiting for their test results.

The National Highway Authority Wednesday claimed it would take another year to complete the Rs1236 million project that was taken by the authority four years back. This mega project was started to help motorists to drive easily without traffic rush here at Jhelum Road. National Highway Authority (NHA) Project Director Muhammad Saleem told ‘The News’ that it would take one more year to complete the expansion work of bridges on Soan River. This mega project would ease traffic flow here at Jhelum Road but local ‘Qabza Mafia’ is creating hurdles in smooth working.
