The execution of an Iranian man for a crime
allegedly committed when he was 16 years old has been
condemned by the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) and raised
concerns over violations of his right to a fair
trial.
In a statement
released on Thursday, OHCHR
spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani pointed out that the
execution of Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee was the fourth
confirmed for a child offender this year and urged Iran to
end the appalling practice .
Despite the fact that
the execution of child offenders is categorically prohibited
under international law, Mr. Rezaiee’s execution took
place in Iran in the early morning.

The Zaka emergency service says 157 Israelis were found dead in their homes, days after their deaths, in 2020, marking a 20% rise from 2019.
The organization notes, in a statement: “Most, but not all, were elderly people living alone, with no-one to care for them or check on their well-being – a situation exacerbated by the isolation and lockdowns that characterized 2020. In every case, these were people living alone who died alone. It was only when neighbors noticed the horrible stench emanating from the apartment, or water flowing from a bathroom, that someone remembered that they had not been seen in a while – and called the police.”

GENEVA (31 December 2020) – Early this morning in Iran,
Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee was executed for an offence he
allegedly committed when he was 16 years old. This is the
fourth confirmed execution of a child offender in Iran in
2020. The execution of child offenders is categorically
prohibited under international law and Iran is under the
obligation to abide by this prohibition. UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet strongly
condemns the killing of Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee. We are also
dismayed that this execution took place despite
interventions and engagement by the UN Human Rights Office
with the Government of Iran on this issue.
