The first thing I did after watching “The Mauritanian” was head to my desktop Globe to locate the exact location in Africa of Mauritania, a country of which I’d never heard. Answer: Northwest coast, just below Western Sahara, just above Senegal.
It s there that this riveting and discomfiting film begins, in November, 2001 – a couple of months after 9/11. That’s when Mohamedou Slahi (Tahar Rahim) is visited by local police at a family party, is forced to leave with them and, before anything is explained, finds himself relocated to his new home: a cramped single cell in Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay.
