UAE: Not shown your labour contract? You can refuse to sign it

Dubai: About to sign your labour contract? It is essential that you read all the details of the contractual relationship you are signing up for, to ensure you are aware of the salary and benefits. A Gulf News reader recently wrote in sharing her husband’s experience, and how he was not provided the chance to read his detailed salary breakdown. She said: “My husband signed an offer letter of an average amount salary and a labour contract, for which only the last page was shown to him. Since he was comfortable with the offer letter, he signed it. After a year, we found out that in his contract, an amount of Dh700 was allocated for the basic salary and Dh1,100 for allowances. Does that make sense? I am planning to go to the Labour office to check and see what their advice is or if we can file a complaint. Now, since he does not plan to renew his contract, he got a draft of his gratuity, which was based on the Dh700 basic salary. A low salary is fine as long as the company is trans

UAE: Is my company legally obliged to give me a flight ticket every year?

Dubai: If your employer provides you with a yearly air ticket allowance, does it have to be based on how much the ticket to your home country costs? A Gulf News reader wrote in, asking whether he was entitled to a yearly air ticket from his employer, and if so, would the amount be based on market prices. He said: “I recently got a job offer from a Sharjah company. They have provided me with a breakdown of my salary, and as part of the benefits, they are only offering Dh1,000 for my yearly air ticket. I told them that the ticket normally costs a lot more and requested that they provide the ticket cost based on the market rate. They have refused to do so. I am confused as I thought a company is required to cover the cost of the yearly ticket to my home country. Can you please let me know if that is correct? If not, what can I do?”

UAE: My employer is refusing to issue the correct air ticket

Dubai: If you are working in the UAE, you may be receiving a ticket allowance every year, based on your company’s employee policy. However, what happens to the ticket amount if you change your nationality? This was the query raised by a Gulf News reader. He asked: “My employment contract states that I am entitled to an annual leave ticket to my home country. When I joined the company I was issued tickets correctly to my home country. However, I recently changed my nationality. This has been communicated to my employer, but they have refused to acknowledge the change in their system and insist on furnishing me a ticket to my previous home country, for which I am no longer a citizen or have any ties or place to stay. What are my rights as I have been denied tickets to my new home country since the past two years? Can I be compensated for missing tickets, as I have paid out of my own pocket? How can I get my employer to acknowledge the change without any fear or repercussion?”
