German Volker Peretz to become head of UN Support Mission in Sudan

January 7 - 2021 NEW YORK / EL TINA / NIERTETI UN Security Council in New York (UN) The UN Secretary-General has announced the selection of Volker Perthes as Special Envoy of the Secretary General to Sudan and Head of the UN Integrated Transition Support Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). Reportedly, five diplomats competed in last months of 2020 for the UNITAMS top job. Sudan s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok would like a European to take the post, but Russia and China disagreed. It seems that the prime minister succeeded, as the newly appointed UNITAMS head is a German national. Between 2005 and 2020, he was director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. In addition, he headed the Ceasefire Task Force of the International Syria Support Group between 2016-2018. In 2015-2016, he served as Senior Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria.

Two killed in fire exchange between smugglers in the Northern State

December 31 - 2020 DONGOLA Thousands of cars have been smuggled into North Darfur in the past years (Social Media) Yesterday, the Rapporteur of the Northern State Security Committee, Brig Gen Mohamed Ali El Hassan, confirmed in a press statement on Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that two people were killed and six others were injured in a violent incident in the El Gab area, west of Dongola.  This press statement came after a meeting chaired by the wali (governor) of the Northern State Amal Ezzeldin. The rapporteur explained that the incident took place when two groups of smugglers exchanged fire after one group tried to seize the other group’s smuggled commodities .

Sudan Boko Haram vehicles to be licensed

December 30 - 2020 KHARTOUM Sudanese who own unlicensed vehicles (popularly called Boko Haram) can legalise their cars within the coming two months. Illegal vehicles found after this period will be confiscated, technical coordinator and spokesmen for the High Committee for the Collection of Weapons and Unlicensed Vehicles Maj Gen Abdelhadi Osman said in a press statement on Monday. He added that the confiscations will be applied “strictly and severely”. Maj Gen Osman also pointed out that the borders will be controlled carefully by the regular forces during this two-month period. Tthe first 15 days of the two-month period, from January 1 until January 15, will be devoted to register and inventory the vehicles. The vehicles will be legalised and licensed in the period from January 16 until March 1.
