The first hurricane ever recorded striking the u. S. On the fourth of july is bearing down on the massachusetts coast. Right now, arthur is approaching cape cod, having stayed far enough at sea to miss most of the Atlantic States on its trip north. When it hit North Carolina overnight, it became the first category 2 hurricane to make landfall in the u. S. In nearly six years, though it didnt cause as much damage as was initially feared there. This is another look at arthur, taken by an astronaut in the International Space station. Even though it is weakened, arthur is drowning out fourth of july plans across new england. Its the eve of americas birthday, and hurricane arthur is about to crash the party along much of the east coast with strong winds and heavy rain. This is wrightsville beach, North Carolina, getting the outer bands of rain. Residents today evacuated the North Carolina coast. Arthur is expected to hit or brush that area early tomorrow.
