An ongoing battle developed for second and third position on day three of GODZone as the 666km race headed into backcountry southeast of Taupō, and there s a well-known face in the running.
GODZone is an eight-day adventure race that includes roughly 365km of mountain biking, 140km of paddling and 190km of trekking.
Participants race day and night around the Bay of Plenty course.
Richie McCaw, who placed sixth in GODZone in Fiordland in 2018, is in a fight for second place with his team isport.

Richie McCaw’s sixth placing at
GODZone in Fiordland back in 2018 has been playing on his
mind and the former All Black seems determined to push his
isport team harder and faster to stay in the placings at
Chapter 9.
Richie and teammates Simone Maier, Dougal
Allan, and Theo Wordsworth regained the second position
overnight last night after bush bashing their way around a
21km Rogaine and trek section through the Whirinaki bush.

in September 2019, and teams have been champing at the bit
ever since to get on with the job of racing.
Day two
of the 666km event has not disappointed with plenty of
fast-paced action at the front of the field with all eyes on
Nathan Fa avae, Sophie Hart, Chris Forne, and Stu Lynch of
Team Avaya.
The team arrived at Rerewhakaaitu Camp,
near Rotorua just after midnight last night, having
overtaken Richie McCaw’s team isport and Queenstown’s

Rotorua s mayor has officially welcomed about 250 competitors taking part in the iconic GODZone Rotorua race, including former All Black Richie McCaw.
The gruelling eight-day 666 km long expedition adventure race gets underway at 9 am tomorrow from Rotorua s iconic Whakarewarewa Maori village.
Today s official GODZone Chapter 9 welcome and race briefing planned for the Rotorua Energy Event Centre (EEC) had to be cancelled due to Level 2 Covid restrictions.
Instead, teams received all their crucial information online before completing individual gear checks at the EEC within their team bubbles.
