Contested Elections
Select Board: Moe Handel, four-term Select Board member and three-time chair, lost his reelection Tuesday when he came in third, with 2,581 votes.
Lakshmi Balachandra, a professor at Babson College, came in first with 3,818 votes. Marcus Nelson, a youth and community organizer, placed second with 3,668 votes. Nelson and Balachandra are the first people of color to ever serve on Needham s Select Board.

More than 5,500 Needham voters cast a ballot in the town s 2021 local election, according to official results provided by the Town Clerk s office shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Needham Select Board
History was made in the contest for two open seats on the Needham Select Board. Lakshmi Balachandra and Marcus Nelson secured roughly 65% of the total votes cast in the contest and are the first two people of color to be elected to the town s executive board.
Balachandra, a professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson, won 34.4% of the vote. Nelson, a director of membership sales and service at the YMCA of Greater Boston, secured 32.1% of the vote.

The League of Women Voters of Needham is hosting two candidate events on Zoom for the upcoming April 13 Annual Town Election.
On March 24 at 7 p.m., “Candidates Night” will feature candidates for the two boards with contested races School Committee and Select Board. Three candidates, no incumbents, are running for two seats on the School Committee:
Liz Lee, Michael O’Brien, and Rebecca Waber. Four candidates are running for the two seats on the Select Board: incumbent Moe Handel, Lakshmi Balachandra, Marcus Nelson, and Serge Zdanovich.
