Regular readers might remember that last week I got out some old games from my own children’s day and played them with my grandchildren. The favourite was definitely the chess and drafts set which Rose and George used as a batttle field until I managed to calm them down.

This week, we did routine things like writing; school; nursery and – oh yes! – the dentist!
I did offer to go with them all to the last but my daughter said she could manage. “I don’t want to put on you too much,” she says kindly.
“You’re not,” I say, quietly thinking of the novel I need to finish.
“Honestly Mum, it’s very nice of you but we’ll be fine.”
I tell myself that my wonderful daughter is more than capable. It’s me who has to learn not to interfere too much. Besides, I’m not particularly fond myself of going in that chair. So I might not be the best person to encourage my grandchildren!

I admit it. It’s all my fault.
It started when I had the bright idea of clearing out the spare room. One of its main features is a massive trunk that contains all my daughter’s paraphernalia during her teenage, uni and pre-marriage days.
I’ve been dying to sort this out for ages to get some more space. But due to certain other pressures in the last year and a quarter, we haven’t been able to do it. Now is the time!
“Look!” says as Rose delightedly as she delves in amongst the bric a brac. “It’s a picture of Mummy.”
