HERE’S an East Lancashire pub which will bring back different memories for you depending on your age. Taken in 1991, this photo shows the formers Crystals fun pub looking forlorn and up for sale. But the establishment on King Street in Blackburn had quite a history. Originally a pub called the Commercial stood on the site but when that was demolished and new premises built, Thwaites Brewery held a competition to name the new pub. The winning entry was the Elma Yerburgh, named after Daniel Thwaites’ daughter, and the pub retained that name for a number of years. The pub gained a reputation for live music when it was the Stonyhurst and then became a fun pub -Crystals.
