Last week, Georgia became the 25th state to implement a permitless carry law. Governors in Alabama, Indiana and Ohio have also signed so-called "constitutional carry" bills during this legislative session. These laws allow people otherwise legally able to possess a firearm to carry concealed without a permit from the state.
One hour after the Alabama Legislature passed HB 272, Governor Ivey passed the Alabama Constitutional Carry bill into law. The law takes effect on January 1, 2023.
Under the law, any law-abiding adult legally eligible to obtain a carry permit can carry a handgun without first having to obtain government permission. Alabama residents will still be able to acquire a concealed carry permit in order to carry in states that maintain CCDW reciprocity with Alabama.
