Durban - eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has joined his Johannesburg and Tshwane counterparts calling for the national government to âeffectivelyâ subsidise the taxi industry.
In a joint statement that was part of the âThe future is public transportâ campaign, Kaunda, along with Joburg mayor Geoff Makhubo, Tshwane mayor Randall Williams and South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) called for the government to provide reliable and consistent operational subsidies to public transport networks to safeguard the health of passengers and drive economic recovery in the face of Covid-19.
The mayors stated while subsidies to the bus and train network presently existed, recent reports suggested they accounted for 23.6% and 9.9% of commuter transport, respectively.
